Player Ratings: Luton Town 2-3 Plymouth Argyle
Luton fell to a disappointing 3-2 defeat at home to Plymouth Argyle, despite the visitors playing with ten men for most of the second half. The Hatters struggled to create chances in front of goal, with both goals coming from the penalty spot.
Luton hosted Tom Cleverley’s Plymouth Argyle in Sky Bet League One.
Matt Bloomfield’s side went behind early after Plymouth’s Matthew Sorinola opened the scoring early in the first half, but their lead was cancelled out by a Jerry Yates penalty in the 21st minute. The visiting Pilgrims regained the lead in first half added time through Bradley Ibrahim, but shortly after half time Luton equalised from the spot again, this time through substitute Nahki Wells.
Plymouth captain Joe Edwards was shown a straight red card for foul play on 50 minutes after bringing down Millenic Alli. Despite playing more than 45 minutes with an extra man, Luton were unable to retake the lead and the visitors scored through Ibrahim again in the 75th minute after a Josh Keeley mistake led to a corner.
Matthew Sorinola was the standout player for Plymouth Argyle.
Despite pushing numbers forward during the final stages of the game, including ten minutes of added time, Luton were unable to threaten Luca Ashby-Hammond in the Plymouth goal.
The full-time whistle was met with loud boos from the Luton fans, the second home league defeat in a row for Matt Bloomfield’s side.
Player Ratings
Josh Keeley - 4
Keeley has impressed so far in a Luton shirt, however his unforced error directly led to the winning goal and he was left isolated on occasion when coming for the ball, including a weak header.
Christ Makosso - 6
Uncertain on the ball and without support to his right at times, it was not the young defenders best performance for Luton.
Mads Andersen - 6
Andersen has established himself as Matt Bloomfield’s first choice centre back and it was after he was substituted that Plymouth scored to make it 3-2. We look like a much stronger team with him in the side.
Nigel Lonwijk - 4
A rare poor performance for Lonwijk was cut short when he was substituted at half time after he picked up a yellow card.
Gideon Kodua - 6
Showed some signs of threat down the right, however he was marked well by Sorinola in the first half. Offers far more when allowed to push higher.
George Saville - 8
The best Luton player by a distance and deserved man of the match, the Northern Irishman won back possession countless times and was a physical presence.
Jordan Clark - 6
A poor performance by his own standards, showed some signs of carrying the ball well however was lacking with his forward passing at times.
Zack Nelson - 5
Struggled to make an impact with the ball and his misplaced touch led to Plymouth’s second goal. Disappointing after a standout performance against Burton.
Millenic Alli - 6
Looked a threat at times in the first half, but picked the ball up too deep throughout the game. Very poor efforts on goal late in the game. Sorinola dealt with him well in the second half.
Lasse Nordås - 5
Luton’s best striker throughout the game, using his body to hold up the ball. Should have been kept on for longer, particularly with the amount of crosses in the second half.
Jerry Yates - 5
Opened his account with a well-taken penalty, however was generally lacking in quality throughout the rest of the game. Hopefully he kicks on after scoring his first goal.
Subs
Kal Naismith - 6
Played relatively well off the bench and looked more composed on the ball than Lonwijk and Makosso. We look more organised having him on the left of the back three.
Nahki Wells - 5
Took his penalty very well, however offered very little and missed a header from a good cross. Didn’t suit the system with crosses into the box.
Shayden Morris - 5
Disappointing 40 minutes after a very promising debut against Barnet. Has plenty of pace but was unable to utilise it due to the low block of Plymouth. Would benefit from playing with a fullback behind him.
Cohen Bramall - 6
Provided width on the left and did very little wrong with overlapping runs and driven balls across the box.
Joe Gbode - N/A
