Luton Town transfer and rumour tracker: Macey exit, Latest on Bree, Edwards hints at incomings

As expected this January transfer window is proving to be a relatively quiet period for the Hatters, with the heavier recruitment being done in the summer.

The Bedfordshire club are yet to add to the squad during the month of transfer activity, whilst there are also yet to be any credible links regarding potential incomings.

Sitting three places and two points outside of the play-off positions as things stand, the Hatters certainly possess a strong squad where competition for places is high.

Here, we take a look at the latest transfer-related headlines concerning the Hatters…

Matt Macey signs for Portsmouth after Scottish interest

Luton’s third-choice goalkeeper Matt Macey embarked on a loan spell at Portsmouth on Friday, with the towering shot-stopper making his debut the following day.

Scottish clubs Aberdeen and Dundee United had held an interest in the former Arsenal youth-team goalkeeper, however, it was Pompey who won the race.

Asked about Macey’s departure and what that could mean in conversation with Luton Today after Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Wigan Athletic, Town boss Edwards did not rule out adding another keeper.

Latest on the Premier League interest in James Bree

Nathan Jones is keen on defender James Bree, as was first reported by Jacob Tanswell of The Athletic.

That report identified Bree, as well as Josip Juranovic as potential right-wing-back options for the Premier League outfit as options that the former Town boss is currently considering.

However, Union Berlin have gone on to sign Juranovic which could potentially accelerate Jones’ pursuit of the Luton defender.

‘One or two’ potential additions

Speaking after the Wigan victory, and whilst talking to Mike Simmonds of Luton Today, Edwards hinted at ‘one or two’ potential arrivals during what remains of this January transfer window.

The Luton boss was quick to mention how happy he is with the current squad at Kenilworth Road.

The central defensive position is an area that has been talked about all window, however, with Reece Burke returning from injury and Gabe Osho showing good form in recent weeks, it remains to be seen if this will be an area that is bolstered.
