Matt Macey to join Portsmouth on loan

Portsmouth have beaten both Aberdeen and Dundee United to Matt Macey, the Luton Town keeper is due to join Pompey on a loan for the rest of the season, as per a report from Peter O'Rourke at Football Insider

Luton Town initially signed Matt Macey on loan from Arsenal (and Stuart Moore from Reading) in our failed bid to get promoted from League 2 in the 2016/17 season, after Christian Walton had been recalled by Brighton & Hove Albion. However, after a somewhat promising showing from the 23 year old during his 13 outings with the Hatters, Macey was recalled by Arsenal due to an injury to second choice goalkeeper David Ospina in order to deputise for Petr Cech. He was subsequently replaced between the sticks by Stuart Moore, who is (not so fondly) remembered by Luton Town fans for his performances in the remaining games of the 2016/17 season, culminating in a performance against Blackpool, with a comical own goal cherry on top. Since his loan period at Luton, Macey has had a loan at Plymouth Argyle during the 2018/19 season, where he played 34 games during a loan to replace injured goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne. He then returned to Arsenal for the 2019/20 season, winning an FA Cup medal in the process, by virtue of being in the Arsenal squad for the final against Chelsea, as backup to Emiliano Martinez. After being released by Arsenal, he was snapped up by Hibernian, signing a 2 year deal with the club. Macey has undoubtedly played his best football north of the border, being fondly remembered by "The Cabbage" for being between the sticks for during their run to the Scottish Cup Final in 2021, where he saved a penalty in a 1-0 loss to St. Johnstone. At the beginning of the 2022/23 season Nathan Jones signed Matt Macey as competition for the number 1 jersey considering James Shea's long term knee injury. The fee was reportedly in the region of £100,000, while not excessive, Macey has played just 1 competitive game for Luton Town, a 3-2 loss against Newport County in the Carabao Cup, where Macey did not cover himself in glory with respect to the Newport County goals. With James Shea potentially close to returning to first team action after his long injury layoff, and Macey having since dropped to third choice keeper behind Harry Isted, it looks like Macey Portsmouth have won the race ahead of Aberdeen and Dundee United to sign the Hatters' keeper.
