Regan Poole: The Luton Town-linked defender

Mention the name Regan Poole to most football fans, and it might feel like an obscure name to pluck out of the Football League. But when we tell you all about the Lincoln City defender, you will want to have a vested interest in hopefully seeing him come in under Rob Edwards' Hatters setup going in to 2023.

As per a report from Football League World, the Hatters are keeping an eye on the League One defender, with the Bedfordshire club being no strangers to searching the lower divisions for talent.

The initial report states that there are several other Championship clubs in pursuit, with Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town and QPR also being credited with an interest.

Only 24 years of age, the Welsh Right back has potential to press forward into Defensive Midfield. He came through the Cardiff City youth set up, before making his professional debut aged 16 for Newport County. Following a loan spell at Northampton Town, he went on to sign for MK Dons in July 2019, where he made 53 appearances for them, scoring three times.

Proving his versatility even further this season, Poole has been tasked with operating as a central defender for the most part of the campaign. Whilst it is certainly not uncommon for a full-back to be tasked with playing on the right side of a back three, as displayed by James Bree, the Lincoln man has been playing as a central defender in a solid back four.

Poole joined League One Lincoln City in January 2021, where he was apart of the side that reached the Play-off final that season, in a losing effort to Blackpool. He's gone on to make over 100 appearances for the Imps so far. Whilst also being capped 23 times for Wales Under 21's, Regan is already carving out a career full of potential yet to be realised. Where he comes into Luton's interests is how the Luton setup is good at nurturing young talent and turning them into consistent fan favourites at Kenilworth Road. After all, when you look at players like Elijah Adebayo and Tom Lockyer compared to when they first joined the Hatters, it proves the system works. When you factor in how weak we are defensively so far this season, adding an extra defender who could give James Bree a challenge at Right Back, then it can only be a positive. With the Hatters returning to action this weekend as Rob Edwards makes his competitive debut at Luton manager, we will begin to see the vision that he wants to bring in over the next few weeks over the festive period. Perhaps when the Transfer window opens on the 1st of January 2023, Luton could be making a move for Regan Poole.
