Kenilworth Road under the lights

Matches at Kenilworth Road are special enough, but when you add the extra element of these games being played under the lights, then this sense of excitement is only amplified.

In recent memory, the 5-0 and 4-0 thumpings of Coventry City and Preston North End last season and the thrilling 3-2 victory over Portsmouth during the title-winning 2018/19 League One campaign come to mind, but ultimately, a lot of these successful night have occurred.

So much so, that ORH decided to take a look at our recent record when we have hosted league matches under the lights...

Undefeated in the league in over four-and-a-half years in our Bedfordshire home in fixtures beyond 7pm, without considering the season where fans were prevented from attending, the last point-less outing came in the form of a 3-2 loss to Wycombe Wanderers in January 2018.

Since then, the Hatters are undefeated in 18 matches under Kenilworth Road's shining lights, a record that of course spans across three different divisions.

During that time, Luton have accumulated 46 points (2.56 PPG) and have scored 52 goals, conceding a mere 18.

It is not like the fixture list has been favourable during these 18 games too. There is the aforementioned clash with Portsmouth when both teams were vying for automatic promotion, whilst a 2-1 victory at home to Brentford during the survival season also stands out as a memorable contest.

During the last campaign, Luton run riot against the Sky Blues and at the time, Coventry were second in the league.

The most recent outing under the lights at Kenilworth Road is perhaps the toughest test Luton have had to face since of recent memory, with Sheffield United looking like they will be battling for automatic promotion this season.

In fact, Friday night's game was the first time since October 2019 where Luton dropped points in an evening fixture in Bedfordshire, with fans in attendance.

There are many reasons why Kenilworth Road is special under the lights, with our recent record something to be extremely proud of.
