Luton Town edge closer to breaking transfer record as 25-year-old heads for medical

Luton Town are near to completing a move for Barnsley centre-back Mads Andersen, with the 25-year-old set to arrive at Kenilworth Road as the newly-promoted Premier League club's record transfer.

According to talkSPORT transfer guru Alex Crook, the central defender is having a medical at The Brache today ahead of a move that will exceed the £1.3 million the Hatters spent on Carlton Morris last summer.

The Danish centre-back, who was capped by his nation at U19 level has spent four seasons at Oakwell, proving to be an integral first-teamer across three seasons in the Championship and Barnsley's League One campaign last time out.

Andersen joined the Tykes from Danish Superliga club AC Horsens in the summer of 2019 and it was reported at the time that the fee was around the £900,000 mark.

Immediately penning down a four-year deal upon arrival at Oakwell, Andersen signed an extension in January that meant that his current deal would expire in the summer of 2024.

Captaining the Tykes to the third-tier play-offs last time out, where they were cruelly edged to promotion by Sheffield Wednesday, Andersen played every minute of the campaign, bar the final two games when their play-off spot had been secured and when automatic promotion became mathematically impossible.

Like the challenge ahead for the Hatters, the Premier League is uncharted territory for the 25-year-old and should no complications arise in these reportedly conclusive stages, he will be striving to dethrone the backline that ended the 2022/23 campaign expertly.
