Luton Town reportedly near deal for Reading duo

Luton Town have grown a reputation for succeeding when seeking gems from the lower divisions and whilst they are now competing in the Premier League, it is a recruitment strategy that is seemingly continuing to be deployed.

As per a report from the Reading Chronicle, the Royals 'are set to lose' defensive pair Tom Holmes and Nelson Abbey to the Bedfordshire club.

The academy products have both worn the captain's armband for the Berkshire outfit this season, with Holmes (23) accumulating over 100 appearances since his debut back in 2017.

Abbey (20) is an England U20 international and has enjoyed an excellent campaign on a personal level thus far, proving to be an integral member of Ruben Selles' squad.

The report claims that a 'cut-price has been agreed between the two sides' and that 'discussions remain underway at an advanced stage'.

It is also detailed that there is potential for the defensive duo to return to Berkshire on loan for the rest of the campaign, should moves for Holmes and Abbey come to fruition.

It is believed that the central defensive position is a priority for the Hatters this January, and whilst there is a perceived need to add, Town centre-back and another former Reading academy graduate Gabe Osho has attracted the interest of Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

Teden Mengi also has Premier League admirers, although Rob Edwards will be keen to keep hold of both Osho and Mengi after impressive and consistent displays.
